虫 (insect)

Chong (虫) in oracle bone script is    , which resembles a snake with visible head and tail. The original meaning of it is a viper. In small seal script, the character     is exclusively used to refer to snake, in which “虫” is a radical, so that Chong becomes a proper noun referring to insects. It is written as three “虫” piled up in small seal script, while in regular script the three are reduced to one. “虫” is also one of the radicals in Chinese, and every word related to it basically has something to do with insects or snakes.
